I’m Katie…

Here are a few things you should know about me…

I drive a minivan with a crumpled front fender and a LOT of dog hair on the inside.
I hate to drive on the highway. Merging makes me very nervous.
My kids have gumption. I’m proud of them for that.
The first book I ever wrote was called Little Wendy and the Big Move. I was 10 years old when I wrote it, and my grandma typed it for me so it would look like a “real” book.

My favorite place to go on vacation is Siesta Key in Florida. Our family has been going there since I was a little girl.
My husband is far and away the best man I know. (and the handsomest, too. I love that guy.)

I enjoy teaching, baking, reading, laughing, going to the movies, and sleeping late.
I love Jesus, and I have enjoyed going to church since I was a first grader in Mrs. Tunder’s Sunday School.
I really dislike sarcasm, unkindness, broccoli, dishonesty, bullying, and driving on the highway (Have I already mentioned that?)
I’d rather have a chocolate milkshake than a glass of wine.
I write about special needs issues, parenting, current events, church, and communication.  I also speak at schools, churches, and conferences about those subjects.

My favorite line in a book: “It is not often that someone comes along who is a true friend and a good writer…(she) was both.” (EB White, Charlotte’s Web.) 

I hope someone will say that about me one day.

  5. Katie, thank you for your story. It must have been difficult to re-live it as you thought, wrote and edited. I know that it can be a blessing too, to see in hindsight how God went before you and your family during such a horrifying time.

  6. Just found what I can do for the next two hours – READ YOUR BLOG! I had no idea you were writing! Can’t wait to dive in and catch up (though seriously, I don’t have the next two hours to do so….but I’ll get through it somehow!)

  12. Hi Katie:

    I have a six year old autistic boy in my Sunday School class of 3 and 4 year olds. He is non-verbal (a couple of words, but not communicating) but clearly understands simple directions. He is unwilling to engage with the class for any activity, either organized and planned craft/story, or spontaneous play. He maintains good eye contact and always is ready with a hug and kiss. Do you have any suggestions on how to tray and engage him in our activities ?

    I have really enjoyed checking out this blog and your thoughts!
    I am in the process of starting a disability ministry blog myself, and I was wondering if you would consider looking at it sometime to give me your thoughts. I am a college student studying Special Education, and really have a heart for inspiring more churches and young people to fully embrace our families touched by special needs into the Body of Christ.
